All ICC T20 World Cup Winners

Through this article, we will be taking a look at all the winners of the ICC T20 World Cups so far. The T20 World Cup which began as ICC World Twenty20 is one of the most popular tournaments in the game and has grown by leaps and bounds since its first-ever edition in 2007. So far, eight editions of the tournament have taken place while the ninth one is taking place in June 2024.

ICC T20 World Cup winners list:

  • T20 World Cup 2007 Winner- India

The inaugural edition of the T20 World Cup was held in 2007 in South Africa. A total of 12 teams had participated in the tournament. The 12 teams were divided into four groups of three teams each. The top two teams from each group advanced to the Super 8.

In the Super 8, the eight teams were further divided into two groups of four teams each. India, England, South Africa and New Zealand were in one group while Pakistan, Australia, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh were in the other group. India, New Zealand, Pakistan and Australia qualified for the semifinals before India and Pakistan fought it out in the final. India went on to beat Pakistan 5 runs to clinch the maiden T20 World Cup.

  • T20 World Cup 2009 Winner- Pakistan

The 2009 edition of the T20 World Cup was held in England. Just like the first edition, 12 teams participated in the second edition as well. The format did not change either. The top two teams from each of the four groups qualified for the Super 8s.

Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka and West Indies qualified for the semifinal. In the final, Pakistan locked horns against Sri Lanka in an All Asian final for the second time in a row. Pakistan, who had finished runners-up in 2007, went on to win the tournament by beating Sri Lanka in the final under the captaincy of Younis Khan.

  • T20 World Cup 2010 Winner- England

West Indies were the hosts for the 2010 edition. 12 teams participated in the third edition as well. The top two teams from each of the four groups qualified for the Super 8s. England, Pakistan, New Zealand, South Africa, Australia, Sri Lanka, India and West Indies made it to the Super 8s.

The eight teams were divided into two groups and the top two teams from each group qualified for the final. England, Pakistan, Australia and Sri Lanka made it to the last four before England and Australia qualified for the final. In the final, England beat Australia to win their first-ever World Cup in any format.

  • T20 World Cup 2012 Winner- West Indies

The T20 World Cup was hosted by an Asian team for the first time in 2012 when Sri Lanka were given the hosting rights. Once again, 12 teams participated in the competition and the format remained the same. Sri Lanka, West Indies, New Zealand, England, Australia, Pakistan, India and South Africa qualified for the Super 8s.

From the Super 8s, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, West Indies and Australia made it to the semifinals. Hosts Sri Lanka and West Indies played in the final and the latter went on to win the game and lift their first T20 World Cup trophy under the captaincy of Daren Sammy.

  • T20 World Cup 2014 Winner- Sri Lanka

The fifth edition of the T20 World Cup was held in Bangladesh in 2014. For the time, 16 teams participated in the T20 World Cup. In the first round, eight teams participated and the top two teams made it to Super 10 stage. The top eight Full Member nations in the ICC rankings had automatically qualified for the Super 10.

In the Super 10, the teams were divided into two groups of five teams each. The top two teams from each group qualified for the semifinals. In the final, Sri Lanka beat India to clinch their maiden T20 World Cup title.

  • T20 World Cup 2016 Winner- West Indies

India hosted the T20 World Cup for the first time in 2016. With 16 teams participating in the competition again, the format remained the same. After the first round and the Super 10s, India, New Zealand, West Indies and England qualified for the semifinals.

In the semifinal, West Indies beat hosts India while England got the better of New Zealand. In the final, West Indies won a thrilling title-decider to become the first team to win the tournament twice.

  • T20 World Cup 2021 Winner- Australia

After the 2016 edition, the next T20 World Cup was held in 2021 in the UAE. While 16 teams participated in the tournament once again, the format was changed. The Super 10 was replaced by Super 12. As a result, the eight teams participating in the first stage played for four and not two available spots in the next round.

In the end, Australia beat New Zealand in the final to win the T20 World Cup for the first time.

  • T20 World Cup 2022 Winner- EnglandĀ 

In 2022, England became the second team after West Indies to win the T20 World Cup twice. They beat Pakistan under the captaincy of Jos Buttler to reclaim the T20 World Cup they had won for the first time in 2010.
